Gin originating in England, but produced all over the world. What most people think of when they think of gin. Has a distinctive juniper flavor, and as a 'dry gin', the flavors are all natural from the botanicals. Common brands include Beefeater, Tanqueray, Bombay Sapphire.

Original style of gin, dating back to 16th-century Holland. The grain base is malted, similar to whiskey, which gives a robust flavor. Genever is the richest of gins, and works best in rich cocktails. Also flavored with juniper and botanicals, but less so than other types.

A sweetened style of gin that was produced in the middle of the 18th century; "Old Tom" was the street name. The most hipster of gins. It's richer in flavor than London Dry, and works well in mixed drinks, pre-Prohibition era cocktails or any drinks with bitters. The original ads were illustrations known for having cats in them.

Technically a style of gin, but it's actually only produced by one brand, Plymouth (one of the oldest distilleries in England), and made with pure water from the Dartmoor reservoir. Flavor-wise, it's drier than London Dry and more citrus forward, has an earthier feel, and a spicier finish from the blend of seven botanicals: juniper, coriander seed, dried sweet orange peels, cardamom, Angelica root, and Orris root.

Year-round citrus fruit with sour flavor and deep green hue.

Club soda, or substitute for sparkling water.

A manufactured form of unflavored carbonated water, commonly used as a drink mixer. Potassium bicarbonate, potassium sulfate or sodium citrate is artificially added to replicate constituents commonly found in natural mineral waters. It can usually be used interchangeably with seltzer water in mixed drinks, though seltzer water lacks added mineral content.

Autumn-spring citrus fruit with moderate-loud volume, sweet-sweet flavor and bright yellow hue.

Place the mint in a chilled old-fashioned glass and pout in the gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup.

Top off with sparkling water, stir gently, and garnish with more fresh mint.
